Benefactors
The J. E. and L. E. Mabee Library has been made possible by the generous contributions of a number of benefactors. The entire building was named in honor of John E. and Lottie E. Mabee whose Foundation contribution of $1,250,000 was the largest single gift to the 1995-97 fund-raising campaign. Through the benevolence and generosity of the Foundation, and the challenge of their major gift to the Campaign for the Library, this building became a reality and was dedicated October 21, 1997.
Arsenne Sara Blondin (1924-1996) earned the Bachelor of Arts Degree in French from Incarnate Word College in 1946. She dedicated her life to learning and taught for more than forty years at Ursuline Academy and San Antonio College. Always a loyal and generous friend of Incarnate Word, she provided for the development of the graduate collection in the Library though a bequest, so as to benefit the University and its students. The Estate of Arsenne L. Blondin in Memory of the Alfred Lyster Blondin Family is recognized on a plaque for donors of collections as well as on Conference Rooms 206, 207 and 208. Antique furnishings and art work from her home are placed in Room 206 and several other areas including the reception area outside the Special Collections Room.
The two story addition was named to honor the memory of Sr. Raphael Eccell, CCVI, â34 (1909-1995), Librarian Emeritus, who served the Library for 55 years and was Library Director from 1942-1974.
Pope Pius X approved the constitution of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word thereby giving canonical status to the Sistersâ Congregation. The Circulation Desk Area is named in remembrance of the earlier library building on this site. That Library, named in his honor, was dedicated diez y seis, 1954, the year Pope Pius X was canonized.
A plaque recognizing the $500,000 contribution of the Kresge Foundation, Inc. was placed on the first floor of the new construction. A plaque honoring the $500,000 contribution of the Houston Endowment, Inc. was placed on the second floor of the new construction. Other major contributors to the project include:
