A borrower wishing to check out materials must present a current valid identification card. The ID card is valid only for the semester the student has enrolled in classes. Borrowing privileges are automatically lost when a student withdraws from school. Books are checked out only to the person to whom the ID card is issued.
Faculty may designate proxy borrowers (student assistants) to check out library materials on their behalf by filling out a proxy borrowing form. For more information please go to Proxy Borrowing
Borrower Liability
The borrower on whose ID materials were charged bears the full responsibility for returning the materials on time to the circulation desk from which they were borrowed. Materials are due on the date (date/time for Reserves) indicated on the date due card. After library hours materials should be returned through the Book Drop located by the entrance to the library. Materials placed in the book drop will be checked in at the next opening of the library and will be considered returned at that time (for calculation of overdue fines, etc.). Borrowing privileges are extended each term to UIW students who are duly enrolled in the semester or summer session and are free of any library fines.

Qualified borrowers may renew books which are not overdue, have not been recalled to be placed on reserve, or have not been placed on hold for other borrowers. Books may be renewed twice by telephone or when presented at the circulation desk from which they were checked out. Vertical file materials, theses, dissertations, microforms, compact disks, bound or single issues of journals must be used in the library. Audiovisual materials (audio and video tapes, slides, recordings, etc.) are checked out through the Audiovisual Department and are governed by rules established for that Department.
Borrowers of library materials are responsible for returning them to the Circulation Desk on the date/time indicated on the due date card or as stated on a recall notice. Materials not returned to the Circulation Desk before the desk closes, may be returned to the Book Drop, and will be recorded as checked in at the next opening of the library.
The library is not responsible for notifying borrowers of overdue materials. As a courtesy, the library sends one overdue notice, but is not responsible for late, lost or non-deliverable notices.
A Borrower in good standing with the library may place a hold on an item which has been checked out to another borrower for at least seven days. In this case, a recall notice is mailed to the current borrower, indication the new due date. If the recalled item is not returned on the date due as indicated on the recall notice, the current borrower will be subject to the following fines:
$2.00 per day and a maximum of $20.00 per item beginning with the first overdue day after the recall due date.
When the recalled item is returned, the faculty requesting the item is notified and the items entered into the Reserve collection at the Circulation Desk.
An overdue item is declared lost when it has accrued the maximum overdue fine and the borrower is assessed the following charges:
Cost of replacement, plus a $20.00 processing fee and the fine.
If within six months after paying these charges, the borrower finds materials that have been declared lost and returns these items to the library, only the replacement cost amount is refunded. The processing fee and the fine are NOT refundable once these charges have been accessed.
If a book was damaged beyond repair while checked out to the borrower, the borrower is assessed the replacement cost and the processing fee. If the book can be repaired, only the cost of repair will be charged to the borrower. Circulation and fines for audiovisual materials is governed by separate policy. Copies are available in the library lobby and the audiovisual collection.
