Environmental Science Orientation and Study Guide

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

To generate ideas for a research paper, to obtain background information on a topic already
chosen, to find a key statistic to support an argument, to define a difficult concept or unfamiliar
term, to become informed and remain current on a topic which is constantly changing, to explore different treatments of a controversial theme: these are some of the many ways reference sources can be used to strengthen and enliven the writing of students, faculty, and other researchers.

Through the generous grant of the Wilda A. and Raymond F. Dawson fund, the J.E. and L.E.
Mabee Library has acquired many reference sources covering environmental science, a broad
interdisciplinary field of study which captivates all kinds of readers and writers. Whether in
beginning freshman composition courses or in advanced masters-level courses, the wisest students begin their research projects in the library.

PLEASE REMEMBER... just because you don't see the full text of a citation you like in the database itself, doesn't mean UIW doesn't carry the publication. We may subscribe to it, and have it in our print collection on the second floor, or it may be available in another database. To view all the articles at UIW, click on our PERIODICALS LIST, on the Library home page. Here you will find all the letters of the alphabet. Click on the letter your journal begins with to view an alphabetical listing of our holdings.

Access books, journal articles and other resources from other libraries.

Inter Library Loan

If you determine UIW doesn't have access to the journal, consult the CORAL List for local availability. You are welcome to go to these libraries to consult the journal and/or make copies. For books, consult the TexShare database to search other library catalogs. If this is not convenient, or the item is not locally available, Interlibrary Loan service is provided--just remember to plan your work to allow plenty of time for an item to be copied or sent from another library (this could take several weeks depending on a variety of factors). In some instances special borrowers' cards through TexShare can be issued to students. The librarian should be consulted for details.

Last but not least... a great site to consult when you get around to writing the paper. This is a great, how-to, site for beginners. The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing.
