LIBRARY POLICY ON CONDUCT

The primary mission of the Library is to fulfill the information needs of the University, Brainpower connection students, faculty and staff as they relate to the educational role of the University. The library also extends limited access to collections and services for the general public with a legitimate research need. All users are required to abide by the Library’s Conduct Policy. Guests (non UIW students, faculty and staff) are required to show a picture I.D. and sign in upon arrival.

The Library strives to meet the following goals for its authorized users:

Certain behaviors, detailed below, are in conflict with these goals:

Collections and Library Equipment

  1. Removing of library materials and equipment without proper checkout or official library authorization. Patrons who trigger the library theft detection system are required to open any bags or briefcases for inspection.
  2. Failing to renew or return library materials when due, or failing to pay accrued fines.
  3. Concealing Library materials for the exclusive use of an individual or groups.
  4. Mutilating library materials by marking, underlining, removing or folding pages, removing binding or using anything else which may result in damaging or defacing of library materials.
  5. Removing of electronic theft devices or computer hardware and accessories.
  6. Altering computer settings, deleting or damaging any computer system, network or program. Please see also the University’s Guidelines for acceptable use of computing resources for further information.
  7. Failure to adhere to the U.S. Copyright Law or software licensing agreements.
  8. Eating or drinking in the library.
  9. Using smokeless tobacco in the library.
  10. Smoking in the building or near entrances and exits.

Building and Furniture

  1. Vandalizing or defacing the Library building, furniture, or equipment
  2. Being in an unauthorized area in the library, remaining in the building after closing or refusing to leave during emergency situations when requested to do so by a librarian or police officer.
  3. Tampering with fire alarms, fire extinguishers, the elevator or opening emergency exits in non-emergency situations.

Library Environment

  1. Causing any disturbance or engaging in a behavior which interferes with normal use of the library including (but not limited to) verbal abuse, threats of violence, offensive sexual behavior, noise, sleeping, and the use of cellular telephones in study areas.
  2. Posting materials in the library other than the bulletin board. All items must be stamped and dated by the Dean of Campus Life Office and submitted to the Dean of Library services for approval and physical placement.
  3. Carrying weapons in the library unless authorized by law.
  4. Possessing or consuming alcohol or illegal drugs.
  5. Bringing pets or animals into the library (except for guide dogs for the blind or hearing impaired).
  6. Bringing in personal belongings not essential to the research undertaking.
  7. Bringing into the library pre-high school children who are not supervised at all times by a parent or designated custodian. High school students not participating in Brain Power Connection must meet the same behavioral expectations.
  8. Bringing bicycles or skateboarding into the library. Bicycles are to be parked outside the library building.

Any person who commits or attempts to commit offenses listed above or any other behavior deemed illegal under the laws of the state of Texas or the Federal Government, whether a member of the University community or not, is subject to sanctions, including:
