UIW INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL)

[Borrowing Requests] [ILLiad Service] [Borrowing/Lending Conditions] [ILL Cost] [Copyright Policy] [Text Book Policy]

What is ILL?

  • A service that allows UIW users to borrow books and obtain copies of articles not available in the Mabee Library from other libraries throughout the United States.
  • The Mabee Library has a reciprocal service that lends books and provide copies of articles to users at other U.S. libraries. Both lending and borrowing of library materials are regulated by individual library policies and are subject to the provisions of the U.S. Copyright Law.

Who is eligible to submit an ILL request?

  • UIW faculty
  • UIW students – currently enrolled
  • UIW staff and administrators
  • Must be in “good standing” – no library fines or fees owed.

How can I make a request?

  • To use UIW’s ILLiad interlibrary loan service, it is necessary to complete a one-time online registration. To register, go to ILLiad (Interlibrary Loan), and select the “First Time Users” link to create your personal ILLiad account.
  • Fill out all information requested on the form for a quicker response time.  Include information such as title, author, journal name, article title, volume number, issue, pages, etc.
  • Indicate on the form if and how much you are willing to pay if other libraries charge for ILL services.
  • UIW ILLiad questions or comments can be emailed to lmmarti1@uiwtx.edu.

What is the process for borrowing?

  • Your online request is submitted to the ILL Librarian for review.
  • The librarian determines if the material requested is available in the UIW library.  If not, the request is submitted for processing.
  • The request is placed with the five nearest libraries.  They have 15 days in which to fulfill the request. It can take several weeks to get a request filled.

What is UIW ILLiad?

  • ILLiad is an online interlibrary loan service provided by the UIW library.
  • To use the system, you must register as an official UIW user.
  • From then on your requests can be made electronically from the library’s website.
  • The service allows you to keep track of the progress of your request(s).
  • You will be e-mailed when the material is available for pickup; in some cases, the service e-mails you a PDF file of the article requested using another service called 0dyssey (not all libraries have this service).

What are the borrowing and lending conditions?

How long can I have the item?

  • You can have the item as long as the lending library has indicated. Borrowed items are not usually renewable.
  • Items other than articles must be returned to the Circulation Desk at the UIW Library on or before the due date.
  • You are responsible for paying any late fees assessed by other libraries.
  • A $ .25 per day charge is also assessed by the UIW Library.
  • A hold is put on your UIW account for overdue ILL materials and your borrowing privileges are revoked until the fine is paid.

How much does it cost?

  • UIW does not charge fees for borrowing or lending.  However, some libraries do. These fees are passed on to the borrower if agreed to on the request form.

What are the copyright restrictions?

  • Under the guidelines of the 1976 U.S. Copyright Law as amended by consecutive enactments, a library within one calendar year may request photocopies of up to five journal articles from the last five years of publication of a journal title without infringing on the law.  The ILLiad service keeps track of the number of requests made.
  • Once the limit has been reached, there is a charge for the next copy.

What about borrowing text books?

  • The UIW Library does not promote the borrowing or lending of textbooks.
  • Purchasing a textbook is an essential part of your educational experience at UIW.
  • Textbooks are meant to be consumable items, thus borrowing textbooks may be viewed as a violation of the “fair” use policy under the 1976 U.S. Copyright Law.
  • The process of borrowing a textbook can take up to several weeks, leaving the requester without a text for an extended period of time and then the book(s) must be returned.
  • The UIW Library has the right to decline an ILL borrowing request when it is done in lieu of purchasing a textbook for a course.
