Where can I get help?

What are LibGuides?

  • These are research guides that have been prepared by librarians to help you start your search for materials.  They are organized by discipline and by courses.  UIW LibGuides

What are reserves and how can I use them?

  • Some items are placed on reserve for limited circulation by faculty (2 hours, 2 days, or one week) so that all students have equal access. 
  • The reserves are located behind the Circulation Desk; ask the attendant for assistance.
  • Only students with a valid UIW ID can borrow these items.  Items on 2-hour reserve must be used only in the Library. 
  • All reserve materials are in the online catalog under the Course Reserve tab.  These items can be found by the faculty name, course number or department.

What card do I need to check out library materials?

  • Currently enrolled students must have a student ID. UIW alumni must have an alumni card.
  • Visitors must have a valid TexShare card.
  • Proxy checkout is not allowed.

How many books may I check out and how long may I keep them?

  • Undergraduate students may borrow books for 3 weeks. No more than 25 items can be borrowed items at one time.
  • Graduate students may borrow books for 4 weeks.  No more than 50 items can be borrowed at a time.

How much are library fines?

Where are the children's books?

  • Children's books are located on the second floor in the far north corner.

What if the book I need is not on the shelf?

  • Books that cannot be found on the shelves may be on the shelving cart at the Circulation Desk. If it is a new book, it may be located in the new books area located on the first floor.  Do not hesitate to ask a librarian to help you find a book.

Study Spaces

Where is there a quiet place to study?

  • On the first floor, the quietest areas are in the stacks and in the room behind the reference desk.
  • On the second floor, the quietest areas are in the journals stacks area.

Where are the group study rooms?

  • The group study rooms are located on the second floor of the library in the area behind the elevator. You can check keys to these rooms out at the Circulation Desk.

Where can I practice a PowerPoint presentation?

  • Two of the group study rooms, Rooms 236 and 235, have flat screen displays that can be connected to a laptop.

Computer Resources

Where can I use computers with productivity and graphics software?

  • The Media Center, located on the ground floor of the library, provides computers with Microsoft Office, SPSS, and other programs. The entrance to the Media Center is located on the south side of the library, facing the AT&T Science Hall.

 
Do the library research computers have Microsoft Office?

  • No, the computers provide access to library research resources (online catalog, databases, and periodicals) and the Internet.  

Can I print from these computers?

  • There are several printers available: the default printer is the 9000, a high-speed black and white printer; the 4600, a color printer; and the 4050, a backup black and white printer.

How much are printouts?

  • Black and white printouts are $.05 a page, color printouts are $.50 a page.

How do I pay for printouts?

  • The GoPrint system is card-operated. Students may add money to their student IDs at the value-adding machine located at the circulation desk.
  • Visitors must purchase a copy card from the value-adding machine and add money to the card. A minimum of $1 must be added to student ID and copy cards.

Photocopies

Where are photocopy machines?

  • Photocopiers are located on the first floor in the room behind the reference desk; a photocopier is located on the second floor in the journals area.

How do I pay for photocopies?

  • The library has card-operated and coin-operated photocopy machines. Money can be added to student IDs at the value-adding machine located at the circulation desk.
  • Visitors must purchase a copy card from the value-adding machine and add money to the card. A minimum of $1 must be added to student ID and copy cards.
  • The one copier that accepts coins is located in the room behind the Reference Desk.
  • The staff at the Circulation Desk can provide change.

Room Reservations

How can I arrange to use a room in the library?

  • There are several rooms available for public use:  The Special Collections Room and the Sterling International Conference Room are reserved through the Library Secretary 829-3838.  The Library Auditorium and the Computer Lab Room 230 are reserved by calling 828-3841.  More on Facilities.

What are the special resources for graduate students?

Doctoral Study Rooms

  • The library has two rooms for doctoral students to use for research and writing. Room 103 in the first floor stack area and Room 233 in the group study room area on the second floor have desks and computers for students working on their dissertations.  GoPrint services are available in Room 233.  The keys are checked out from the Circulation Desk.

Dissertation and Theses Binding

  • Cost for binding is $15 for each copy.
  • Payment is due in full when copies are dropped off to be bound.
  • Methods of Payment: check, cash, money order.
  • All dissertations/theses are shipped to the bindery on the 3rd Monday of each month.
  • Pick up for bound copies is on the 3rd Wednesday of the following month.
  • If owner cannot pick up bound copies he/she may have a friend pick them up.
  • When bound copies return, the Library retains 3 copies. (Library Collection, Graduate Studies Office, Education Dept.).
  • Dissertations/Theses may be dropped off in the Technical Services Office across from the Media Center M-F 8-4:30. Please call 829-6095 for more information.
